Pickleball and Padel: the World’s Fastest-Growing Sports

Two upstarts—padel and pickleball—have emerged as challengers. Neither is new: padel originated in Mexico in 1969; pickleball emerged in the United States in 1965. But both sports have flourished in recent years amid growing interest in non-contact sports, fueled by the coronavirus pandemic. Padel and pickleball have a lot in common with old-school racquet sports, especially tennis. Padel is played on a walled court similar to a squash court, but uses the same scoring system as tennis. Pickleball is played on a field half the size of a tennis court, using table tennis paddles.

Padel and pickleball fans say their sports are more accessible than tennis. Smaller racquets are easier to use, underarm serves are easier to master, and running around the court is less tiring. Pickleball has proven particularly popular among American retirees. Both sports are also more intense than tennis, as tennis matches can drag on for hours.

An estimated 25 million people play padel , fewer than the 87 million expected to play tennis. But padel enthusiasts claim that it is the fastest growing sport in the world. Pickleball has fewer players, but its numbers are growing rapidly. There will be nearly 9 million pickleball players in the United States by 2022, but by 2021 there will be fewer than 5 million, in 2023, the number of contacts increased dramatically.according to national governing bodies. Leagues were introduced in both sports. Qatar sponsors the Super Padel Tour, which includes tennis-style Grand Slam tournaments. USA Pickleball Major League launches in 2021 in the United States.

In the previous articles, the information and some details about the padel tennis court were detailed. Here is a brief description of pickleball.

Pickleball is a hard plastic thin-shelled hollow ball, which is larger than a tennis ball and usually comes in more eye-catching bright colors such as yellow, orange and green. It has 40 specially designed round holes, which can reduce wind resistance, make the flight path of the pickleball outdoors more stable, and have stronger bounce ability.

The pickleball racket is like a large table tennis racket. The sum of the length and width cannot exceed 60.96cm, and the length cannot exceed 43.18cm. The size of the pickleball court and badminton court are the same. The size of the pickleball court is approximately 13.41×6.10m, and the same court is used for both singles and doubles.

The simplicity and ease of use of pickleball are the reasons why it is so popular among people. The pickleball court is only 1/4 of the size of a tennis court, which means that playing pickleball does not require too many intense forward, backward, and evasive movements. Pickleball is undoubtedly a national sport suitable for all ages.

According to the World Pickleball Federation, pickleball has been confirmed to become a performance event at the 2024 Paris Olympics. It aims to become an official competitive event in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
