What Makes a Padel Court Last? Insights from Industry Standards

Padel is booming worldwide — over 15,000 courts in Spain alone, and rapid growth across the UK, US, and Middle East . But not every court is built to last.

FIP Dimensions Matter

A regulation padel court measures 20m x 10m. The International Padel Federation (FIP) sets this standard, with a 0.5% tolerance for competitive play . The enclosure reaches 4m total height — 3m of glass or solid material, topped with 1m of mesh .

Why so precise? Because the walls are part of the game. The ball rebounds off glass and mesh — irregular surfaces mean unpredictable bounces.

Glass: 12mm Toughened, Not Optional

According to the UK’s SAPCA Code of Practice, outdoor courts must use 12mm toughened glass for rebound ends (indoor can use 10mm) . Glass should have polished safety corners and meet CE, SGCC, or AS/NZS2208 standards . Less than 12mm? You’re compromising safety and performance.

Corrosion Protection: The Silent Differentiator

Second-hand or poorly coated courts fail quickly in harsh climates. Industry experts warn: not all climates suit the same courts . Proper hot-dip galvanization + electrostatic powder coating extends steel life to 15+ years. Without it, expect rust within 3–5 years

Playing Surface: Monofilament Preferred

The SAPCA Code recommends monofilament artificial grass, sand-dressed or sand-filled, specifically designed for padel . The surface must comply with UNE 147301:2018 (Spanish National Standard, adopted by FIP) for sports performance in both dry and wet conditions .

Key testing requirements include ball rebound consistency, slip resistance, and UV stability. Turf lines should be tufted directly into the carpet — painted lines fade and require maintenance.

Lighting: Glare Is the Enemy

CE-certified LEDs with parallel mounting and sports-specific optics ensure uniform coverage. No glare. No dark spots. Minimum clearance height for indoor courts: 6m (FIP recommends 8m for new builds) .

Total Cost of Ownership

Installing a padel court isn’t just about the initial price. The UK cost guide shows:

ComponentTypical Cost Range (GBP)
Court with lights£36,000–£128,000
Ring beam, base & drainage£35,000–£140,000
Canopy (covered court)£50,000–£160,000

Quality materials reduce maintenance costs and extend court life by 5–7 years
